Four steps on your phone once your eSIM is installed. The third one is the one that saves you money — most guides leave it out.
On iPhone
Settings looks slightly different by iOS version, but the path is the same. Australian and UK iPhones say Mobile Data; US iPhones say Cellular.
Use the Katara eSIM for data
Settings › Mobile Data. Tap Mobile Data and pick the Katara line.
Roaming on for Katara
Tap the Katara line › Mobile Data Options. Switch Data Roaming on.
Roaming off for your home SIM
Go back, tap your usual carrier, and switch Data Roaming off.
Give the line a name
Tap the Katara line › Mobile Plan Label. Pick something you’ll recognise.
Install before you fly, switch on when you land. You need wifi to install, so do it at home. Your plan starts counting down the first time the eSIM connects to a network overseas — not when you install it.
On Android
Samsung wording is shown here. Pixel and other Android phones use Network & internet rather than Connections, but the toggles are the same.
Use the Katara eSIM for data
Settings › Connections › SIM manager. Set mobile data to the Katara line.
Roaming on for Katara
Connections › Mobile networks. Switch Data roaming on with the Katara line selected.
Roaming off for your home SIM
Switch to your usual SIM at the top of the same screen and turn Data roaming off.
Check it’s working
Flight mode on for ten seconds, then off. Open a browser.
